Joe 2/20/2007
I have owned this camera for 11 months. While I have experienced an occaisional noise problem, I have for the most part, taken some stunning photos with this camera. An avid backpacker, weight and versatility were my main concerns. I did not want to lug around 5 to 6 lbs of SLR camera gear and lenses. With the incredibly sharp 12x mega zoom and leight weight frame, and OIS (eliminates the need for tripod(most of the time it is the most versatile choice I could find.
The best feature on this camera is the lens.
Other things that perform well are the burst mode (if you have a high speed SD memory card).
OIS image stabalization is EXCELLENT
Zooming is nearly seamless
autofocus performs well, though some hunting at full tele
I can't say enough this lens is powerful
LCD is large but low res.
Battery life is quite good. I have two lithium ion battery packs and they are sufficient for my needs, though they have sightly diminished in performance over the course of the year. These batteries were expensive, $60.00 but aftermarket brands are now about $15 $20.
I also like the range of control you get with this camera. Full manual shutter, aperature, flash, focus, some white balance control, ISO settings Color effect, etc., can all be manipulated in Manual.
Simple mode is easy enough for ANYONE to use.
Summarizing:
Lightweight
Super Sharp lens
Very good ergonomics and ease of use
Some considerable noise in low light forcing lower sensitivity settings to compensate.
1 year later and probably still the best buy for your money in this category.
